  7. This is the first article in a monthly posting series from the Network
  8. Measurement Project at the DEC Western Research Laboratory in Palo
  9. Alto, California.

  11. This survey is based on a sample of data taken from various USENET
  12. sites.  At the end of this article there is a short explanation of the
  13. measurement techniques and the meaning of the various statistics.  The
  14. messages that follow this one show survey data sorted by various
  15. criteria.

  17. The newsgroup volume and article counts that I post are often
  18. significantly different from the ones posted by Rick Adams, because he
  19. includes the size of a crossposted article in every group to which it
  20. is posted, whereas I charge that size only to the first-named group.
  21.  
  22. The complete set of readership data (of which this is a summary) is
  23. posted in news.lists. The software that will let your site participate
  24. in the survey is in comp.sources.d and news.admin
